A holiday to Luxor offers the chance to discover an open-air museum, home to two of Egypt’s most impressive temples – the Temple of Luxor in
the heart of the city and the Temple of Karnak just a mile or so to the North. The two are linked by an avenue of Sphinxes, which stretches somewhat incongruously through the modern city of Luxor. Karnak is the largest of the remaining Nile temples, which is spread over a huge area, and was built over a period of some 1300 years.
Luxor is the place from which most Nile cruises depart and holidays in Luxor have been popular ever since the first Nile steamers passed through in the 1860’s. Luxor is still a great base for exploring the ancient sites of Thebes, not just the temples but also the vast Necropolis of the West Bank, incorporating the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. For those who prefer to be based on dry land a holiday to Luxor is a convenient way to visit many of the Nile’s other temples.
Take a trip by hot air balloon over Luxor and the surrounding area to appreciate the true scale of the Ancient Egyptian’s achievements and the vast area covered by the sites. A holiday in Luxor is also a good choice for those who wish to spend some time relaxing in the sun and soaking up
the atmosphere. The lively souk is a great place to hone your bartering skills and stock up on souvenirs of your holiday. Enjoy a ride by caleche, the traditional horse-drawn carriages which ply the Nile-front Corniche, and admire the scenery.
Don’t forget to make time in your holiday in Luxor for afternoon tea at the Winter Palace, which has changed little since the days of the Grand Tour.
