The Old Winter Palace in the heart of Luxor has been welcoming guests since 1902. The grand lobby really sets the tone for the hotel with its Oriental rugs and opulent furnishings, gilded, unfeasibly high ceilings and sweeping staircase with wrought-iron balustrade. It retains its Victorian splendour and an atmosphere reminiscent of a former way of life. Afternoon tea is served in the Victorian lounge and guests must dress in smart casual wear here and in the Royal bar. The Old Winter Palace’s beautiful, mature formal gardens are to the rear of the hotel, with the large swimming pool set in their midst.
