A course to treasure. The National was the first course to be built in Belek and some would argue the best. No conformist to convention; The National does not allow a golfer to ease into their round, requiring instead full attention from the first hole. A solid start will stand golfers in good stead for the remainder of the round.
Designed by David Feherty, the Ryder Cup golfer, and David Jones, The National was the first course to be constructed in Belek. The course exudes a distinct British flavour tinged with American style water hazards. Questions are asked of the golfer from the first shot, with there being only one par 4 in the first five holes! The first hole, a par 5 of just under 600 yards, requires three good shots out of anyone's bag to get home in regulation. A warm up on the practice range is essential if the golfer is hoping to start well, as the second hole is a par 3 to an island green fronted by railway sleepers. If the golfers are lucky they will watch Kingfishers skimming the lake whilst waiting to hole a birdie putt. Again, the par 5 4th hole of over 550 yards with a water hazard bordering the entire length of the left side, offers no respite over the opening third of the course.
Not that the course becomes any easier! The back nine allows the aquaphobic tendencies to subside slightly until reaching the par 4 14th. Measuring 465 yards a prodigious drive is required, then the lake protecting the left side of fairway and green comes into view. Lastly, one encounters the 18th, the most photographed hole on the course. A lake lurks for errant drives dragged down the left and stretches to the green, which is tucked tight against it. Any shot tugged to the left will find a watery grave and bunkers await golfers who bail out to the left. No wonder the National is rated so highly as one of the best courses in Europe.
