Holidays in Loryma Peninsula (Çiftlik Koyu, Kumlubük & Selimiye)
The Loryma Peninsula is home to some of Turkey’s most stunning scenery. Fjord-like inlets and tiny rocky islets characterise this coastline, with fragrant pine-clad hills dropping steeply to the azure seas. This beautiful region is renowned for its rich harvest of almonds and fragrant herbs such as oregano and sage, as well as its famous, delicious pine honey. It was part of the ancient kingdom of Caria which arose as a Hittite kingdom in the 11th century BC and eventually became a province of the Roman Empire.
We have selected a choice of three hotels in this region in very different settings. The Green Platan in Çiftlik Koyu and the Serendip Select in Kumlubük are ideal for those who want to get away from it all and relax in a relatively isolated setting. The Palmetto Resort in Selimiye, on the other hand, is perfect for those who want to experience traditional village life. None of these enchanting places is more than around 45 minutes drive from Marmaris, perhaps the most commercialised of Turkey’s resorts, and yet they are all a world away in character offering tranquillity and unspoiled charm. There are no shops, let alone banks or post offices in Çiftlik Koyu or Kumlubük and although Selimiye does have shops, it does not have exchange facilities either.
Çiftlik Koyu is a wide bay boasting one of the finest sandy beaches on the peninsula, overlooked by the ruins of the acropolis of the ancient village of Syrna on the brow of the hill above. It offers a stunning setting and is a perfect choice for those who like their entertainment to be hotel-based. There is plenty going on with activities to suit all the family, and is especially recommended for families with older children.
The tranquil hamlet of Kumlubük, however, is more suited to those who enjoy peace and quiet, and like nothing more than a good book or a romantic stroll along the beach, where there are a handful of restaurants. With two sweeping bays of fine shingle, crystal clear waters and spectacular mountain views, this is the perfect spot for a truly relaxing holiday. A good half an hour’s trek takes you up to the ancient city of Amos where you will be rewarded with not only a glimpse into the areas fascinating past, but also breathtaking views. Remains include city walls, a theatre and necropolis. The delightful resort of Turunc occupies the next bay along and is easily reached by way of a short taxi ride. Here you will find shops and a wider choice of restaurants as well as a beautiful stretch of beach, awarded the coveted Blue Flag for its cleanliness. Turunc also hosts a Monday market, popular with locals and tourists alike.
Selimiye is an idyllic traditional Turkish fishing village set on a wide bay with a mountain backdrop and a ruined fortress on a hill overlooking the azure sea. Fishermen mend their nets on the pebble beach as their colourful boats bob in the clear waters of the bay. The catch of fresh fish and seafood is served the same day at the seafront restaurants, renowned for their delicious fare. The only sounds are those of the craftsmen going about their daily work at the village boatyard and the call to prayer, the haunting chant of the Muezzin, from the tiny whitewashed mosque. It is a rare pleasure to be in an area where you are more likely to come across a herd of goats or a farmer riding a donkey, than a coach load of tourists!
