Holidays in Kyrenia
Kyrenia, North Cyprus – A picturesque harbour town, surrounded by impressive scenic beauty in an area steeped in compelling history.
Holidays in Kyrenia revolve around the enchanting horseshoe-shaped harbour, the perfect spot for an evening promenade. Dominated by the Venetian castle to one side, in times gone by these harbour side premises were carob warehouses, now they are charming seafront restaurants, cafes and bars. Relax with a long, cold brandy sour - the local speciality – admire the views and soak up an environment that is of yesteryear.
The foothills of the mountains are the natural habitat for a vast variety of flora and fauna indigenous to Kyrenia. Holiday in Spring to spot the rare orchids, which grow wild here. It is also a popular time of year with keen ramblers. Nestling in the foothills are sleepy villages, where life continues today in the same rhythms as it has done for centuries. The Castle of St. Hilarion perches high above the town, surveying the coastline below, its fairytale towers appearing to rise from the sheer rock, affording stunning views of the glittering coastline around Kyrenia.
Holiday accommodation is spread around the region in sleepy hillside villages and coastal areas. Kyrenia’s clear, warm Mediterranean waters are blessed with fine sandy bays and rocky coves, so the beach-lover will not be disappointed. There is no place more charming than Bellapais village, made famous by Lawrence Durrell in his book ‘Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’ with the remains of its historic Abbey and the infamous Tree of Idleness. Bellapais village has been the inspiration for artists, photographers and writers for centuries. Set on the hillside, above Kyrenia, perched on a natural terrace, the main feature of the village is undoubtedly the 14th century Bellapais Abbey with spectacular panoramic views over Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia and the Mediterranean beyond.
Kyrenia holiday accommodation ranges from luxurious five star hotels to family-run establishments and villas with pools, offering something to suit everyone.
