Enjoy holidays in Rabat, Morocco's capital since 1912, and home to the Royal Palace, official residence of King Hassan II. This modern city has numerous parks, wide, tree-lined boulevards and a handful of decent beaches to head to when temperatures soar. Rabat holidays offer much for those interested in history, this fascinating city is thought to date back to the third century BC when settlement was first made on the banks of the Oued Bou Regreg River. The Roman city of Sala Colonia lies on the outskirts, but a forum and triumphal arch are about the only identifiable remains. The site was subsequently used as a necropolis (Chellah Necropolis) by the Almohad dynasty in the 14th century. Though damaged significantly by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, the complex is still a worthwhile diversion and is today a popular tourist attraction. Many of the artefacts found here, along with prehistoric finds from the surrounding area, can be viewed in Rabat's impressive Archaeology Museum.
Rabat city breaks promise other must-see sites such as the UNESCO-recognised Hassan Tower, an iconic, red sandstone minaret, part-finished owing to the death of Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour in 1199, when construction was promptly abandoned; the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, one of the country's finest examples of modern Alaouite dynasty architecture, completed in 1971; and the Kasbah of the Udayas, home to Rabat's oldest mosque, the 850 year-old Jami al-Atiq.
Holidays in Rabat also appeal to watersports lovers, head north to enjoy prime windsurfing conditions, powerful tides however mean that conditions are not well suited to much more than paddling. Beaches to the south include Temara and Skirat.
