The picturesque old town of Antalya, Turkey's Mediterranean jewel, is known as 'Kaleiçi', which literally means 'within the citadel'. It is a maze of narrow winding streets leading down to the harbour, sheltered by the ancient city walls that have stood since Roman times. Antalya, once known as ancient 'Attaleia', was founded by Attalus II, a king of Pergamum, in 159 BC. One of its finest monuments is the impressive Hadrian's Gate, with deep wheel ruts still clearly visible, it is a wonderful reminder of the area's fascinating past.
Turkey's traditional wooden sailing boats, known as gulets leave from Antalya's picturesque old harbour to explore the beautiful coast and its hidden caves, be sure to take a trip out on the crystal clear waters, it's an experience you won't want to miss.
Kaleiçi has its own small but attractive 'Mermerli' beach, set to one side of Antalya harbour. Steep steps leading down the cliff reach the sunbathing terraces and sandy beach area. Or for those seeking more active Antalya holidays, there are plenty of watersports available from the larger sandy beach of Lara just outside the town, as well as walking, climbing and caving in the mountains surrounding Antalya. Turkey's most impressive waterfalls and unusual caves are situated in this region, which is one of great natural beauty.
There is a wealth of history to explore in the vicinity of Antalya - Turkey's best known sites such as the ruins of the ancient cities of Pamphylia, for example. The huge amphitheatre at Side is one of the most impressive in the Mediterranean, not least due to its beachfront location. Aspendos has the best-preserved theatre in Asia Minor, the setting for many concerts, including the famous Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival which takes place in early summer, and Perge too is well worth a visit.
With a mild climate even in winter, Antalya is a year-round holiday destination. This year we are also offering it as a versatile short break holiday - perfect for golfers, spa enthusiasts, history buffs, bargain-hunters and sun-seekers alike.
Luxury Antalya hotels in the old town are intimate establishments, mostly housed in restored Ottoman mansions. The Alp Pasha is a wonderful base for holidays to Antalya, this sumptuous, converted Ottoman mansion is centrally located and also has an impressive array of facilities on site. The lovely Puding Marina Residence consists of five renovated historical mansions and is just a five minute walk from nearby Mermerli beach.
