Highlights: Gemiler: A small island lies a short distance off the coast on which you will find the remains of a sizeable Byzantine settlement and although many of the buildings are in ruins, there is still plenty to see. According to local folklore the island was once a pirate stronghold and another story tells the tale of the island being ruled by a Queen who had skin sensitive to the sun. A covered road was built from her palace on the top of the island down to the sea so she could go for a swim, parts of an arched road do still exist so perhaps there is some truth to the story. Kekova: Taking its name from the Greek ?Kakava? meaning ?the island of partridges? (although none can be seen today), Kekova Island is situated just off the mainland. As you cruise the channel keep your eyes out, the area is famous for the submerged ruins, the submerged harbour at Kale Köy and the sarcophagus breaking through the water. |
